JAPAN'S CLASSIC TRAVEL ROUTE

Weather and climate along your route

If you are planning Japan’s classic route through Tokyo, Kyoto and Osaka, you will want to know what conditions to expect at each stop. Although the Shinkansen connects the cities within a few hours, heat, humidity, rain and wind can differ noticeably. A direct comparison helps with day trips, sightseeing plans and deciding what to pack. During the rainy season, midsummer or typhoon season, the hourly outlook matters far more than a general monthly average.

Tokyo

Tokyo’s exposed Pacific setting brings humid summers, a pronounced rainy season and potentially strong wind and rainfall from tropical systems. Winters are often drier and sunnier, though nights can still become chilly.

Kyoto

Kyoto’s basin traps heat and moisture in summer, making high temperatures feel especially oppressive. In winter it encourages cold mornings, while winds are often lighter than on the coast.

Osaka

Osaka is moderated by its bay but remains warm and humid through much of summer. The coast can add some airflow, yet it also makes heavy rain and wind particularly relevant during unsettled weather.
